Highest head utilization in Sri Lanka for a small hydro power project
Being the highest head utilization in Sri Lanka for a small hydro power project, Loggal oya phase 2 project utilizes a gross head of 500m and a flow of 1.2 Cumecs to generate 5,000kW of electrical power.
The project comprise of 2500m long steel penstock. The design pressure closer to the turbine is 75 bar, resulting very heavy steel thickness for pipes. The project comprise of high quality European turbines & generators (Twin Jet Pelton).
The project is located in isolated village with minimum infrastructure. (Akiriya Village, Badulla District, UVA Province). The project construction team responsible for penstock faced many challenges when constructing the steel penstock line without any motorable access.
